Raleigh, NC – The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted Tuesday to extend voting at five precincts in four counties, due to stoppages in voting during the day. The issues that resulted in voting delays varied by county.

With about 2,625 polling places statewide, it is not unusual for minor issues to occur at polling sites that result in brief disruptions to voting. The State Board routinely meets to discuss the extension of hours when the need arises on Election Day.
Hours for voting (N.C.G.S. § 163-166.25) authorizes the State Board to extend voting hours at sites where voting is interrupted for at least 15 minutes, but the Board may extend voting only as long as the disruption and only for the affected sites. All votes cast by voters who arrive at the voting site after 7:30 p.m. in these precincts will be provisional votes, per state law.
Election officials cannot release results while voting continues in many contests. The State Board will not publish any unofficial results statewide until all polls are closed.
As such, the first results are expected to be posted at around 8:15 p.m. For unofficial results, go to the Election Results Dashboard.
