RALEIGH, N.C. – The regular filing period begins at noon Monday, Feb. 12, and ends at noon Feb. 28 for candidates running for most elected offices across North Carolina in 2018.
“We look forward to working with candidates during this important mid-term election year,” said Kim Westbrook Strach, State Board executive director.
Filing may be done in person or by mail. For details, please see the “Candidate Filing” page on the State Board website.
Candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives and district attorney will file at the State Board office in Raleigh.
Candidates for other offices, including N.C. House and N.C. Senate, will file at the Board of Elections office in the county of their residence.
Throughout the filing period, a statewide candidate list will be posted to the State Board website. It will be updated three times daily.
A separate process exists for candidates qualifying by petition and those running for judicial seats, including N.C. Supreme Court, N.C. Court of Appeals, Superior Court and District Court. The filing period for judicial candidates will be June 18-29.
The 2018 primary election is May 8. The general election is Nov. 6.
For Candidates:
Candidates who wish to file for any office should review the appropriate Fact Sheet available on the “Candidate Filing” page of the State Board’s website. The State Board’s “Candidate’s Guide to Elections in North Carolina” is a valuable resource for all candidates.
Once a candidate has filed, the deadline to withdraw a notice of candidacy is Friday, Feb. 23.
Please be advised that the State Board office moved in fall 2017. We are now located on the Third Floor of the Dobbs Building, 430 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603. All visitors must show identification at the front desk and pass through a metal detector upon entering the building.
Parking is available for visitors in Deck #75, a block down North Salisbury Street from the Dobbs Building. As you pass the Dobbs Building on the left, you will see a State Capitol Police office on the right. You will take the second right after the police office, which will take you directly to the visitors’ deck.
