The day after the May 17 primary, the State Board of Elections will randomly select precincts, early voting sites, and absentee-by-mail ballots to be counted by hand in each county to confirm accuracy of the results counted by machine. 

The 2022 statewide primary election is Tuesday, May 17, and the State Board of Elections wants to be sure that media representatives and voters have answers to common questions about Election Day and post-election processes.

With in-person early voting ending at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, Primary Election Day is right around the corner – on Tuesday, May 17. The following are 12 tips for voters who cast their ballot on Primary Election Day.

3:01 p.m: The State Board of Elections on Tuesday finalized election results for the November 2021 municipal elections and took steps toward expanding and improving the state’s post-election audits and better explaining them to voters.

4:03 p.m: In continued efforts to ensure confidence in North Carolina elections, 17 county boards of elections will pilot risk-limiting audits of the November 2, 2021 municipal elections.

12:12 p.m: Under state law, election officials must release the number of provisional ballots cast in each county by noon two days after each election.

As 2020 ends, the State Board of Elections is looking back on a busy and historic year in North Carolina elections.

The State Board of Elections voted unanimously to certify results in the NC Supreme Court Chief Justice contest, with Republican Paul Newby as the winner.

As of 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, county boards of elections had completed hand-to-eye recounts of the Supreme Court Chief Justice contest in 83 of 142 recount sites, with the ballots from the remaining 59 Election Day precincts and early voting sites to be counted in the coming days.
